Rajab begins: Ramadan expected to start on March 1 in UAE

The UAE Astronomy Centre has announced that Wednesday, January 1, marks the first day of the Islamic month of Rajab. This signifies that Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, is now approximately two months away, Khaleej Times reported.

Despite cloudy and foggy skies, the Al Khatim Astronomical Observatory successfully spotted the crescent moon on Tuesday at 11 AM UAE time. The observation process was conducted remotely via an online connection with the observatory.

Rajab is followed by Shaaban in the Islamic lunar calendar, with Ramadan arriving after Shaaban. The exact start of Ramadan depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon, typically observed on the 29th day of Shaaban. Most astronomical predictions indicate Ramadan will begin on March 1 in the UAE.

Moon sighting to determine Ramadan’s start is a cherished tradition in many Islamic countries. Communities in nations like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Indonesia, and Pakistan often gather in mosques or open areas to witness the crescent, celebrating its appearance with nationwide announcements.
