Makkah and other parts of Saudi Arabia experienced extreme weather conditions earlier this week, with videos going viral of pilgrims searching for shelter amidst rainstorms in Makkah on Tuesday. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued a red alert in the province and some parts of the Kingdom on Wednesday morning, advising caution due to the rocky weather.
Extreme Weather in Jeddah
A video shared on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, showed the city of Jeddah also experiencing extreme weather conditions, with clouds of dust rising before the camera, resembling a scene from an apocalyptic film. Other videos on the platform showed rains and strong winds battering Saudi’s holy site.
Pilgrims and Staffers Seek Shelter
People on the streets were seen running for cover, while staffers at the Grand Mosque struggled to stay on their feet as they tried holding on to large garbage cans being blown away by the strong winds. A lightning strike hitting the Grand Mosque was also caught on camera, adding to the daunting visuals of the extreme weather.
