Qatar temporarily closes airspace amid rising regional tensions

Qatar has temporarily closed its airspace in response to escalating developments in the region, the country’s foreign ministry announced on X.

The decision, according to the official statement, was made to “ensure the safety of residents and visitors,” as concerns mount over potential fallout from ongoing geopolitical unrest.

This precautionary move comes on the heels of renewed threats from Iran, which vowed to retaliate against the United States following recent attacks on its nuclear facilities. While Qatar did not directly link the closure to any specific threat, the timing reflects heightened regional alertness.

Authorities have yet to announce when the airspace will reopen, as security assessments continue.

Update:

Explosions echoed across Doha on Monday evening, shaking parts of the capital just hours after Qatar announced the temporary closure of its airspace due to escalating tensions in the region.

According to AFP journalists, the blasts were heard in central Doha and as far as Lusail, north of the capital. Eyewitnesses also reported seeing projectiles streaking across the night sky, adding to the mounting anxiety in the Gulf state.

The timing of the explosions came shortly after Qatar’s foreign ministry confirmed it had closed its airspace as a precautionary step to protect residents and visitors, following regional developments triggered by U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement on the nature or origin of the blasts.
