Pura Luka Vega, a former contestant on “Drag Den Philippines”, is turning to the public for financial support as they face backlash from various localities declaring them persona non grata. This follows a provocative performance deemed by many as “blasphemous and a disrespect to religion.”
The artist sparked controversy when they donned religious attire and sang a rock rendition of the prayer “Ama Namin” during a drag number. The act drew widespread criticism, especially from politicians and leaders within the Catholic community.
Vega took to Instagram, stating, “WE’RE GOING TO COURT And we need your help more than ever … your donations will go to Luka’s family and for transpo/food for their court dates this September.”
Beyond the persona non grata declarations, the Philippines for Jesus Movement, a coalition of Christian organizations, has filed criminal charges against Vega. Adding to their legal challenges, the Hijos Del Nazareno Central, representing Black Nazarene devotees, has lodged a complaint against the drag artist at the Manila Regional Trial Court.
Pura Luka Vega has long been recognized in the Philippine drag scene for their signature interpretations of religious figures, particularly Jesus Christ. The now-viral “Ama Namin” performance has notably affected their career, hindering their livelihood as a drag artist.
