Public cautioned against buying imitation Labubu toys due to lead contamination risk

The environmental group EcoWaste Coalition has issued a warning urging consumers to steer clear of unofficial Labubu-themed merchandise, citing potential lead contamination, a hazardous element for humans.

In a statement released on Saturday, EcoWaste noted that Divisoria in Manila has seen a surge in imitation Labubu items, including stuffed toys, key chains, and phone accessories, available at low prices. The group highlighted that these products often lack proper authorization and essential labeling.

EcoWaste revealed that out of 42 Labubu-inspired items it purchased for testing, only five were partially labeled, while the remaining items were unlabeled. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) screening detected lead in five of the items. The group emphasized the dangers of lead exposure, particularly to children and women of childbearing age, as it can severely impact multiple body systems, potentially leading to brain damage, developmental issues, and even death in severe cases, according to the World Health Organization.

Additionally, EcoWaste found that 24 of the 42 items contained polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, which is often combined with chemical additives like lead and phthalates. These additives are known to disrupt hormonal balance and have been linked to health issues such as asthma and developmental abnormalities.

The coalition advised parents to keep products made with lead or PVC plastic away from children and to prioritize buying labeled and authorized toys to ensure safety.
