President Marcos hails Alex Eala’s gutsy Miami Open run as a proud moment for Filipinos

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has lauded tennis sensation Alex Eala for her remarkable performance in the 2025 Miami Open, calling her a symbol of Filipino perseverance and pride.

Eala, 19, entered the tournament as a wildcard but made headlines after toppling three Grand Slam champions—Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Swiatek—before falling in a tightly contested semifinal match against world No. 4 Jessica Pegula.

Marcos praised Eala’s grit and resilience, describing her as a “tennis phenomenon” whose efforts have inspired the nation. “What Alex showed the world is the heart of a true Filipino athlete—steadfast and unafraid of challenges,” he said on social media.

The Presidential Communications Office also saluted Eala for her trailblazing journey, especially during Women’s Month, celebrating her as a Filipina who continues to make waves on the global stage. “Through persistence and hard work, Alex proved that anything is possible,” the PCO said.

Aside from national recognition, Eala’s semifinal finish secures her over US$300,000 in prize money and a major jump in WTA rankings, moving her closer to the Top 100 and future Grand Slam entries.

President Marcos expressed optimism about her career, saying this milestone is just the beginning for the young tennis star.
