President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has signed the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, a new law that ensures the protection of the rights of both domestic and overseas seafarers. Republic Act No. 12021 was signed on Monday during a ceremony at Malacañan Palace.
The law outlines various rights for seafarers, including fair working conditions, the right to organize, affordable education and training, access to information, and protection against discrimination. It also guarantees the right to safe travel, legal representation, and medical assistance.
A key feature of the law is the requirement for a written standard employment contract between shipowners and overseas seafarers, detailing work hours, benefits, and compensation. Senate President Francis Escudero noted that the law is expected to benefit over half a million Filipino seafarers.
