President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has reaffirmed his strong working relationship with Vice President Sara Duterte, dismissing concerns raised by First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos. Speaking to reporters on April 23, President Marcos stated that Vice President Duterte would not be replaced as the Department of Education Secretary, emphasizing his confidence in her role.
“Why? I don’t see the reason behind that,” President Marcos stated, addressing speculations about Duterte’s potential replacement in the Cabinet.
In response to his wife’s aired grievances, President Marcos expressed gratitude, saying, “My first reaction is what a lucky husband I am that I have a wife na very protective sa’kin.” He acknowledged her concerns, stating, “Na may nakita na ‘di magandang sinabi sa’kin ay iyan talagang she gets very upset and I guess we cannot blame her.”
The controversy stemmed from remarks made by First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos during an interview with journalist Anthony Taberna on April 19, where she expressed hurt over perceived disrespect from Vice President Duterte. The First Lady recounted feeling offended when Duterte allegedly laughed at derogatory remarks made about President Marcos during a January prayer rally in Davao City.
Asked about the possibility of reconciliation, the First Lady remarked that Duterte’s actions indicated a lack of willingness to mend fences.
In response, Vice President Duterte emphasized that such matters were not within her official duties and suggested a private discussion with President Marcos to address the issue constructively.
President Marcos affirmed his commitment to resolving the issue, stating his intention to discuss the matter with Vice President Duterte directly. He assured the public that their professional collaboration would continue unhindered.
“It will not affect our working relationship with the Vice President, Secretary of Education,” President Marcos asserted, highlighting the importance of understanding the First Lady’s perspective amidst public scrutiny.
President Marcos further reassured that Vice President Duterte would not be replaced unless she failed to fulfill her duties or engaged in misconduct. He affirmed, “Hindi naman ganun si Inday Sara,” indicating his confidence in her capabilities.
