Pope Leo XIV prays for Cebu earthquake victims, urges Filipinos to stay united

Pope Leo XIV offered prayers for those affected by the deadly earthquake that struck Cebu province last week, expressing solidarity with Filipinos grieving the loss of lives and homes.

During his Sunday Angelus at St. Peter’s Square, the Pontiff said, “I express my closeness to the Filipino people, I pray for all those who are challenged by the consequences of the earthquake.”

He also called on the faithful to draw strength from their faith amid the tragedy. “Let us remain united and supportive in our trust in God and in the intercession of our Blessed Mother,” he added.

The magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit off the coast of Bogo City on September 30, toppling houses, damaging public structures, and killing at least 72 people. Hundreds were injured while thousands remain displaced as relief and recovery operations continue.

Local authorities reported that the shallow offshore quake caused extensive damage across northern Cebu and neighboring islands. Aftershocks have persisted in the days following the disaster, further hampering rescue and aid efforts.
