Pope Leo XIV once visited Cebu’s Santo Niño de Cebu Parish in 2004

Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected head of the Catholic Church, has a unique connection to the Philippines. Long before his election as the 267th pope, Robert Francis Prevost—now known as Pope Leo XIV—visited the Augustinian Community of Santo Niño de Cebu Parish in Barangay Mohon, Talisay City, Cebu, on May 2, 2004. He was there to join the community in celebrating the 19th anniversary of the parish’s establishment as a Domus Formata.

Back then, he walked among the faithful, sharing in prayer, fraternity, and mission with the local community. His visit reflected his deep sense of humility and dedication to service, qualities that now define his papacy. A man who once stood among the faithful in Cebu is now leading the global Catholic Church.

Pope Leo XIV was elected on May 8, 2025, becoming the first American to ascend to the papacy. Since his election, world leaders have extended their congratulations, including those from the United Arab Emirates. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan shared his well-wishes on social media, expressing his hope that the new pope will continue promoting peace and mutual understanding globally. UAE Vice President and Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also congratulated Pope Leo XIV, highlighting the Vatican’s role in fostering dialogue and coexistence.
