The Vatican has assured the public that Pope Francis remains alert and in stable condition as he undergoes treatment for pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The 88-year-old pontiff, admitted on February 14 due to breathing difficulties, reportedly got out of bed and ate breakfast while seated in an armchair, according to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni.
Despite the Pope’s signs of improvement, reports have surfaced that the Swiss Guard has been preparing for his funeral. According to Swiss newspaper Blick, members of the guard have been placed under curfew as they rehearse procedures for the pontiff’s passing.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Pope Francis on Wednesday, describing him as “alert and responsive.” She noted that he maintained his trademark humor, even joking about speculation surrounding his health.
Medical updates indicate that Francis, who is suffering from double pneumonia, is not on a ventilator and is breathing on his own. The Vatican has emphasized that he will remain in the hospital for as long as necessary to address the complexity of his condition.
While the Pope has faced various health challenges in recent years, including multiple hospitalizations and surgeries, he has dismissed concerns about stepping down, unlike his predecessor Benedict XVI. Francis continues to oversee Church affairs, reportedly making phone calls and handling paperwork from his hospital room.
