Pope Francis is scheduled to arrive in Dubai on December 1st aboard ITA Airways’ carbon-neutral plane, to participate in the highly anticipated COP28 climate conference. The pontiff’s journey from Rome Fiumicino to Dubai World Central Airport will begin at 11.30 am, landing in Dubai at 8.25 pm UAE time.
Accompanying the Pope will be a delegation of Italian and international media representatives. This visit marks a significant commitment by the Pope to engage in global climate discussions. He plans to stay in Dubai for three days, participating in key climate talks and holding bilateral meetings with various world leaders, including King Charles.
ITA Airways has taken special measures to ensure a sustainable journey for the Pope. The flight will be operated by an Airbus A330neo, known for its fuel efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions by 25% per passenger compared to previous-generation aircraft. The flight crew includes 14 members, led by Commander Corrado Di Maria, an experienced pilot with 18,000 flight hours.
To further ensure the sustainability of the flight, ITA Airways has developed a comprehensive plan. This includes efficient operational procedures, the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and offsetting remaining emissions through a Gold Standard certified CO2 reduction project. The airline’s president, Antonino Turicchi, along with other senior team members, will personally receive the Pope at Fiumicino Airport.
