A 14-year-old student abducted outside his school in Taguig City last February 20 was rescued by authorities along Macapagal Avenue in Parañaque City on Tuesday evening.
According to Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Police Col. Randulf Tuanio, the suspects were forced to release the victim after learning through intelligence operations that police were closing in on them.
Authorities are currently looking into links with Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) as a motive behind the kidnapping.
“Initially, one family member had past involvement in a POGO-related business, particularly involving the settlement of unpaid debts,” Tuanio explained.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, speaking at a Malacañang briefing, confirmed that the kidnappers demanded a ransom of $20 million for the student’s release.
“We are definitely sure the kidnapping syndicate behind this incident involves former POGO operators,” Remulla stated.
The Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) recovered crucial information about the suspects from an abandoned vehicle found in Bulacan, where the body of the victim’s driver was also discovered.
The rescued student is now recovering in a hospital while the investigation continues.
