Chilean authorities are conducting an investigation following a startling discovery in Santiago: an 80-year-old nun left a suitcase containing the remains of her friend, who had been deceased for a year, on a city street. The finding on Monday sent shockwaves through a community already on edge about rising crime levels.
Video footage identified the nun, clad in her habit, at the scene, leading to her later identification. According to police official Juan Fonseca, there was a poignant reason behind the nun’s actions: “There was a pact. The person died a year ago and the other has kept her in a suitcase ever since due to the affection she had” for her friend.
The deceased nun, aged 58, had passed away from an illness, with no suspicion of foul play. A recycler initially stumbled upon the suitcase but recoiled due to a foul odor emanating from it.
Despite the unusual circumstances, the nun has not been apprehended. However, she faces potential repercussions under public health regulations for failing to report her friend’s death, which could have led to proper burial or cremation.
Reports from Chilean media suggest that the two women had not belonged to a formal religious order but had taken private vows, highlighting the unique nature of their relationship and commitment to one another.
