The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced a 16.02 percent drop in the crime rate from September 1 to December 2 this year compared to the same period last year.
PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Jean Fajardo shared the positive update during a media briefing, highlighting that despite concerns of increased crimes during the holiday season, this year’s figures show a decline.
“Contrary to our fears that crimes would rise during the ‘ber’ months, this year’s crime incidents are lower compared to last year,” Fajardo said.
However, the PNP’s Anti-Cybercrime Group flagged a surge in cyber-related offenses, particularly scams involving travel and accommodation, online buying and selling, and unauthorized access to digital accounts.
“We are closely monitoring these cases. Victims should immediately report to our regional anti-cybercrime units for assistance,” Fajardo added.
She also urged the public to stay vigilant, especially during online transactions, to avoid falling victim to scams that typically increase during the holiday season.
