Fifteen people, including eight minors, died due to drowning incidents during the Holy Week, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
In a statement released on Good Friday, the PNP confirmed that the fatalities were recorded in several regions, including Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
“These heartbreaking incidents are a painful reminder of how quickly accidents can happen,” PNP chief Gen. Rommel Marbil said. He emphasized the need for greater vigilance, especially around children, and called on both resort owners and local officials to improve safety protocols.
“I am appealing to everyone: never leave minors unattended near water, always wear life vests when necessary, and avoid swimming in areas without lifeguards or safety supervision,” Marbil added.
The PNP urged the public to prioritize safety when visiting beaches, resorts, and other bodies of water, especially during long holidays and peak travel periods.
