PNP pays tribute to officer killed in Washington D.C. plane-helicopter crash

Police Colonel Pergentino “Bong” Malabed Jr., one of the casualties in a fatal air collision in Washington D.C., will be posthumously awarded the Medalya ng Katapatan sa Paglilingkod (PNP Distinguished Service Medal) and Medalya ng Katangitanging Gawa (PNP Outstanding Achievement Medal), the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Thursday.

Malabed’s family will also receive over P2.6 million in financial assistance from the PNP Savings and Loan Association, Inc. (PNP-SLAI) and other insurance benefits, providing crucial support following his untimely passing.

His remains are expected to arrive in the Philippines on Thursday, where the PNP will render foyer honors at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport before transferring him to Camp Crame for arrival honors, a religious service, and a public viewing. A vigil will be held, followed by necrological services at Camp Crame’s Multi-Purpose Center.

On February 27, Malabed will be laid to rest at Memorial Gardens in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.

PNP Chief Police General Rommel Marbil expressed deep sorrow over Malabed’s passing, emphasizing his dedication to public service. “PCOL Malabed dedicated his life to serving the Filipino people. His loss is deeply felt, but his legacy of professionalism and commitment will always be remembered,” Marbil said.

Malabed was in the U.S. for testing of all-purpose vests for the PNP when he decided to visit his brother in South Carolina. He was among the passengers of an American Airlines flight that collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter on January 30, resulting in the deaths of all 67 people on board both aircraft.
