In a move to intensify its efforts against organized crime and digital deception, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has formed two specialized committees aimed at cracking down on rising kidnapping cases and the spread of fake news.
The Joint Anti-Kidnapping Action Committee (JAKAC), to be led by PLTGEN Edgar Alan Okubo, will spearhead operations against kidnap-for-hire groups. This initiative follows the recent breakthrough in the high-profile kidnapping and murder of businessman Anson Que and his driver, Armanie Pabillo—an incident allegedly orchestrated by Chinese national David Tan Liao.
PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil praised Okubo and the Special Investigation Task Group for their swift response. “Three suspects have been arrested while two others remain at large,” he said.
To address the spread of harmful online misinformation, the PNP also launched the Joint Anti-Fake News Action Committee (JAFNAC), headed by PLTGEN Robert Rodriguez. The new unit will be tasked with identifying and acting on fake news that threatens public order.
“These committees are not just organizational measures—they are proactive responses to modern-day threats,” Marbil said. “From kidnap-for-hire syndicates to digital disinformation campaigns, the PNP is moving decisively to protect our people. This is our commitment to Bagong Pilipinas—ensuring that law and truth prevail.”
The PNP has recently dispelled multiple false reports about alleged abductions of prominent businessmen that circulated online. According to Marbil, those behind such malicious posts will be held accountable.
“Fake news is not harmless—it can incite fear, panic, and even unrest. Under Bagong Pilipinas, we are taking a firm stand. We will not allow deception to dictate the public narrative,” he said.
