Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Marbil has pointed to social media as a major factor behind the public’s growing concern over crime, even as official records show a significant drop in incidents.
Speaking on Saturday, Marbil said the country has seen a 26.76% decrease in crime since the start of 2025. However, he did not release a detailed breakdown of the numbers.
“While crime data shows a clear decline, the way cases are amplified online makes it seem like things are getting worse,” he said, emphasizing the need for better communication and responsible sharing of information.
The PNP earlier reported an 18.4% drop in crime during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the final months of 2024.
Marbil also called on police units to strengthen ties with the public, encouraged media literacy efforts, and urged journalists to give a balanced view of both crime stories and law enforcement efforts.
