Plane fire forces passengers to escape via slides on Houston runway

Passengers aboard a United Airlines flight were forced to evacuate at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Sunday morning after an engine issue led to flames and smoke on the right wing during takeoff.

United Flight 1382, bound for New York’s LaGuardia Airport, was halted on the runway shortly after 8:30 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Airbus A319 reportedly received an engine warning, prompting an emergency stop.

Footage captured by a passenger showed bright flames and thick smoke trailing from the wing as the plane sped down the runway. “Please, please, get us out of here,” a passenger was heard saying in the video, aired by KPRC-TV.

All 104 passengers and five crew members exited the aircraft using emergency slides and stairs before being transported back to the terminal by bus. No injuries were reported.

United Airlines arranged for a replacement aircraft to complete the journey, with a new departure scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT.

The FAA confirmed it would investigate the incident, adding to growing aviation safety concerns following two fatal crashes earlier this year.
