Pimentel backs Marcos’ Cabinet reset, urges appointment of non-political figures

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Thursday welcomed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s decision to call for the courtesy resignation of all Cabinet secretaries, describing it as a “great move” that allows the President to recalibrate his team without the burden of political intrigues.

In a brief statement, Pimentel said the move gives Marcos the chance to “regroup” and set a clearer direction for the administration’s second half following the recently concluded 2025 midterm elections.

He encouraged the President to fill potential vacancies with individuals who are committed solely to public service, rather than political aspirations.

“Best to recruit those with no ambitions to be elected in the 2028 elections,” Pimentel said, emphasizing the value of appointing people who can approach governance with objectivity and scientific reasoning.

The Cabinet shake-up, as earlier explained by Marcos, is intended to align leadership with the public’s expectations and ensure faster, results-driven performance. While he acknowledged the hard work of many officials, the President said the country’s evolving challenges demand a renewed focus on delivery and accountability.
