Pilot forgets passport, international flight forced to turn back mid-air

A United Airlines flight bound for Shanghai had to return to the U.S. mid-journey after one of its pilots realized they had forgotten their passport.

Flight 198, a Boeing 787 that left Los Angeles International Airport at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, was rerouted and landed in San Francisco around 5:00 p.m., instead of continuing to China, CNN International reported.

United Airlines confirmed the incident, saying, “The pilot did not have their passport onboard.”

The flight was carrying 257 passengers and 13 crew members. The airline arranged a replacement crew and provided affected passengers with meal vouchers and compensation.

The new flight departed San Francisco at 9:00 p.m., ultimately arriving in Shanghai six hours later than originally scheduled.
