Pilita Corrales, beloved Philippine music icon, dies at 85

Legendary Filipino singer Pilita Corrales has passed away at the age of 85, her family confirmed on Saturday. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

A native of Cebu, Corrales became one of the most iconic voices in Philippine music history, earning the titles “Asia’s Queen of Songs” and “The Greatest Singer in the Philippines.” Her illustrious career spanned over six decades, with more than 135 albums recorded.

Corrales broke barriers as the first Filipino artist to top the Australian pop charts and gained international acclaim at the Tokyo Music Festival in 1972. She also made waves on television with her popular variety show An Evening with Pilita, regarded as a milestone in local broadcasting.

Among her many honors were a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philippine Association of the Record Industry and an honorary Doctorate in Music from the University of Visayas.

She leaves behind a legacy of timeless classics like “A Million Thanks to You” and “Kapantay ay Langit,” and is celebrated for bringing Original Pilipino Music (OPM) to the global stage.
