PH’s Casimero banned from fighting in Japan for a year after missing weight

Former three-division champion John Riel Casimero has been handed a one-year suspension by the Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) after failing to make the 122-pound super bantamweight limit for his recent fight against Saul Sanchez.

Casimero, 35, initially weighed in 1 kilogram over the limit during the official weigh-in and was given two hours to shed the excess weight. Despite this, he returned to the scales at 123 pounds.

The bout still proceeded, and Casimero defeated his Mexican opponent in the first round. However, the JBC has confirmed that Casimero will be barred from fighting in Japan for a year due to the infraction.

This suspension comes after Casimero’s back-to-back appearances in Japan, where he fought Yukinori Oguni to a technical draw and secured a technical knockout victory over Sanchez. Casimero’s record stands at 34 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw, with 23 knockouts.
