Philippines to open migrant workers office in Cambodia to protect OFWs

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is set to open a new Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Cambodia, following the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. during his dialogue with more than 500 Filipinos in Phnom Penh on September 7.

The office will directly serve the country’s estimated 10,000 nationals in Cambodia, providing them with legal aid, welfare support, reintegration programs, and skills training.

“We shall immediately comply with the directive of the President to establish a Migrant Workers’ Office in Cambodia, through full coordination with DFA Secretary Tess Lazaro and Ambassador Flerida Mayo,” DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac confirmed.

The move comes amid growing alarm over scam hubs in Cambodia that have increasingly targeted Filipinos. Ambassador Flerida Ann Camille Mayo reported that such cases have more than doubled this year, with at least 24 victims rescued in August 2025 alone.

President Marcos, while addressing the Filipino community, commended overseas workers for their crucial role in strengthening economic and diplomatic ties between the Philippines and Cambodia. He acknowledged their contributions in schools, hospitals, businesses, and infrastructure development.

Currently, the DMW operates 42 Migrant Workers Offices worldwide and is pushing to expand its presence in more countries with sizable Filipino populations.
