The Philippines is set to host the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in 2027, marking a historic opportunity to spotlight the growing momentum of women’s basketball in the country.
The announcement was made by FIBA on Thursday, confirming the return of the prestigious continental event to Philippine soil. It will be the country’s second major FIBA event in recent years, following the successful co-hosting of the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup.
FIBA Executive Director-Asia Hagop Khajirian expressed enthusiasm over the decision. “We are excited to return to the Philippines for a FIBA Asia event,” he said. “We believe hosting the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup event in the Philippines, where basketball has a passionate following, will help FIBA’s efforts to promote women’s basketball in Asia.”
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) welcomed the news as a validation of their ongoing efforts to elevate the women’s game. “The SBP is proud to be the host for the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2027,” said SBP president Al Panlilio. “The federation has always been an ardent partner of FIBA in prioritizing the growth of women’s basketball, and it’s about time for the Philippines to do even more.”
Panlilio noted that the timing couldn’t be better, citing the rise of a women’s professional league in the Philippines and the increasing number of national team players securing contracts overseas as signs of progress.
China is set to host the 2025 edition of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup, before the tournament makes its way to the Philippines two years later.
