The Philippine government has extended its heartfelt appreciation to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following the humanitarian pardon granted to 68 Filipino detainees last month, in celebration of Eid al-Adha.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) described the act as a profound show of compassion and friendship, highlighting the strength of ties between the two nations.
“This generous and benevolent gesture is a testament to the robust bilateral relations between the Philippines and the UAE, and a lasting gift to the families of the pardoned Filipinos,” the DFA said in a statement.
The names and cases of the released individuals have not been disclosed, but the pardon is part of the UAE’s long-standing tradition of granting clemency during major Islamic holidays.
Earlier this year, a similar pardon was extended to over 100 Filipinos during Ramadan. In his recent State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. acknowledged that more than 600 Filipinos overseas have been granted clemency in the past three years through sustained diplomatic efforts.
