The Philippines achieved a major milestone at the 2024 World Travel Awards (WTA), winning four prestigious titles, including two first-time recognitions. The Department of Tourism (DOT) announced these victories, highlighting the country’s growing reputation in global tourism.
For the first time, Boracay Island was named the “World’s Leading Island Destination,” beating notable competitors such as Jersey in the UK and Caribbean destinations like The Bahamas and Mustique. The DOT also claimed its first-ever win as the “World’s Leading Tourist Board,” outshining 24 other nominees, including major tourism boards from Greece, Hong Kong, and Australia.
The Philippines continued its dominance as the “World’s Leading Dive Destination,” marking its sixth win in this category since 2019. Additionally, Manila was crowned the “World’s Leading City Destination” for the second time, triumphing over global cities like Dubai, London, and New York City.
DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco unveiled the WTA trophies during a coastal clean-up in Anilao, Batangas, as part of the Philippine Dive Experience program. Frasco emphasized that the awards reflect the DOT’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity, aligning with President Marcos’ vision to position the Philippines as a tourism leader in Asia.
The event also underscored regional collaboration, with discussions on strengthening ties with Thailand and Malaysia to promote Southeast Asian tourism. New flight routes between the Philippines and Thailand, including Cebu to Phuket and Clark to Bangkok, were announced, further boosting connectivity and regional cooperation.
The WTA Grand Final Gala was held on November 24 at the Savoy Palace in Madeira, Portugal.
