The Philippine government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), has pledged to assist Filipinos impacted by the massive wildfires in Southern California, where mandatory evacuations are in place for affected residents.
DFA Assistant Secretary Adelio Angelito Cruz revealed during an interview on Super Radyo dzBB that many Filipinos have been displaced by the wildfires, but only three families have sought help so far. “We’ve been trying to reach our kababayan through all possible means, but only a few have approached us for assistance. Many may be staying with relatives in Los Angeles,” Cruz explained.
The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles has issued an advisory urging Filipinos in affected areas, including Los Angeles, Riverside, and Ventura Counties, to monitor local advisories, prepare for emergencies, and follow evacuation orders. Those needing assistance can contact the Consulate’s hotline at (323) 528-1528.
Consulate officials have also visited Filipinos staying at the Pasadena Evacuation Center and are coordinating with the community to assess the situation of those who have lost their homes. Some displaced individuals have been taken in by fellow Filipinos in the area.
The wildfires, which have ravaged Los Angeles neighborhoods since Tuesday, have claimed at least 10 lives, destroyed nearly 10,000 structures, and left thousands displaced. Firefighters have reportedly gained some control over the blazes, according to a Reuters report, but the full extent of the damage remains under assessment.
