The Philippines has emerged as the global leader in online video consumption, with 97.2% of its population aged 16 to 64 engaging in video watching weekly, reveals the Digital 2024 Global Overview Report. The report, a collaboration between We Are Social and Meltwater, highlights the Philippines’ top position in a list that includes Mexico, South Africa, and Indonesia, all boasting high percentages of online video viewers.
Data from GWI’s survey in the third quarter of 2023 underpins these findings. Filipinos not only lead in video consumption but also rank high in internet usage, spending an average of 8 hours and 52 minutes daily, following South Africa and Brazil.
The study also notes the popularity of platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Netflix, pointing to Data AI Intelligence’s data from late 2023. While over 5 billion people are now media users, with the growth rate holding above 5%, the surge in digital engagement is showing signs of slowing. The report interprets this as a natural plateau, with the majority of the world now online. However, it also acknowledges the 2.7 billion individuals who remain offline at the start of 2024, indicating a digital divide that persists globally.
