Aira Villegas kicked off Philippine boxing’s campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a victory, defeating Morocco’s Yasmine Mouttaki by unanimous decision in the women’s 50kg event on Monday (Philippine time).
Villegas secured the win after three rounds, with judges scoring the bout 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 in her favor.
Despite a late scare in the third round, Villegas bounced back with a powerful left punch that sealed her victory.
Next, Villegas will compete against Algeria’s Roumaysa Boualam in the Round of 16 on Friday.
