Philippine embassy and consulate laud UAE’s clemency for 220 OFWs

The Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai have issued a joint statement expressing their heartfelt gratitude to the UAE government for granting royal clemency to 220 Filipinos convicted of various crimes. This gesture coincides with the celebration of the UAE’s 53rd National Day, a moment described as a testament to the values of compassion, justice, and mercy guiding the country’s leadership.

The joint statement thanked UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other UAE leaders for their generosity, underscoring the enduring friendship between the two nations. “We are deeply appreciative of the continued generosity and understanding shown by the government and people of the UAE towards Filipinos,” the statement read. The missions emphasized that this act reaffirms the growing bilateral relationship built on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared values.

The pardon, granted as part of the UAE’s National Day celebrations, is seen as a significant step toward fostering peace, reconciliation, and human dignity. This is not the first time the UAE has shown such magnanimity toward the Filipino community, with similar gestures made during past holidays and events.

In coordination with the Migrant Workers Offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the Philippine diplomatic missions pledged to provide all necessary support to ensure the safe and immediate repatriation of the pardoned individuals. “We will provide the needed assistance to ensure the safe and immediate return to the Philippines of those who will be released from their incarceration,” the statement affirmed.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also extended his gratitude to the UAE leaders, noting that this act of clemency not only brings relief to many Filipino families but also strengthens the bond between the two nations. He described the UAE’s decision as a reflection of its commitment to mutual goodwill and cooperation.

The Philippine Embassy and Consulate General reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Filipinos in the UAE. They highlighted the significance of this pardon as a “significant expression of our enduring and growing bilateral relationship.”
