Philippine Dragon Boat Federation sets sights on victory in Hong Kong international races

The Philippine Dragon Boat Federation (PDBF) is back in the waters of Hong Kong, ready to compete against some of the world’s top paddling teams at the Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races, running from May 31 to June 8.

This year’s edition of the prestigious event is bigger and bolder, featuring over 190 teams and more than 4,500 athletes from 12 countries and regions. The high-stakes showdown will take place in Victoria Harbour on June 7 and 8, transforming the Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade into a festive dragon boat carnival complete with food stalls, live broadcasts, and cultural performances.

Among the contenders, the Philippine team is aiming for redemption. After finishing second runner-up in the Women’s Grand Championship last year, the team is determined to paddle harder for the win.

“It’s a fact that we’ve struggled against stronger teams in the past, but we believe that our members can rise to the occasion and finish on the podium this year once more,” said Marcia Cristobal of PDBF. “With every opportunity given to us, we will respond and give our best to bring pride and honor to our country.”

The competition is part of the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s (HKTB) “Cultural Beat” campaign, designed to spotlight the city’s vibrant traditions and world-class festivities. According to HKTB Executive Director Dane Cheng, this year’s dragon boat event offers “a blend of cultural activities and celebrations steeped in Hong Kong’s east-meets-west heritage,” promising an unforgettable experience for both visitors and residents.

As the races unfold, spectators can enjoy a variety of attractions including a Dragon Boat Food Lane, photo zones featuring Ocean Park’s beloved Panda Friends, a lively Beer Garden by San Miguel, and dazzling pop-up performances by Cirque du Soleil. The grand finals and award ceremony will also be broadcast live on RTHK TV 32 and streaming platforms.

The PDBF’s return to Hong Kong comes just weeks after competing in Macau, with the team bringing renewed focus and determination to the international stage.
