With just a month before the start of Donald Trump’s second presidential term, Philippine consulates across the United States are readying their services to help undocumented Filipinos who wish to return home amid anticipated changes in immigration policies.
New York Consul General Senen Mangalile confirmed in a GMA News report that the consulates are equipped to support Filipinos affected by potential mass deportations. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has allocated funds under its Assistance to Nationals (ATN) program to cover plane tickets for those who choose to go back to the Philippines.
“Filipino citizens in the US who need help for repatriation can access the ATN Fund,” Mangalile said, noting that the consulate’s Assistance to Nationals Section operates from Monday to Friday. Filipinos can also reach out via email or the consulate’s hotline for urgent cases.
Mangalile emphasized that undocumented Filipinos should not fear approaching the consulate, assuring them that they will not face detention for seeking assistance. He reaffirmed the consulate’s commitment to helping Filipinos regardless of immigration status.
There are an estimated 370,000 undocumented Filipinos in the United States, many of whom reside in California, Hawaii, New Jersey, Texas, Illinois, and Washington, DC. The Philippine government continues to coordinate efforts to provide necessary support while respecting US laws.
