A Philippine-flagged cargo ship sank in the San Bernardino Strait near Samar island on Monday, claiming the life of one crew member and leaving two others missing, the Coast Guard reported on Tuesday.
According to an AFP report, the vessel, Jerlyn Kathness, encountered rough waves while transporting 24 tonnes of cement from Cebu to Samar. Eleven of the 15 crew members were rescued overnight by passing ships, according to Coast Guard station commander Bryhl Amay.
Another crew member, who spent over 25 hours in the water, managed to reach the tiny island of San Juan early Tuesday. Meanwhile, fishermen recovered the body of a crew member off the nearby island of Biri.
A search operation is ongoing for the two missing crew members. The Jerlyn Kathness, a 199-tonne general cargo ship built in 1993, has yet to be fully assessed for further details.
