Philippine Airlines marks 85 years with arrival of its first Airbus A350-1000

Philippine Airlines introduced a new chapter in its fleet modernization on Saturday as it rolled out its first Airbus A350-1000, a long-range aircraft that places the flag carrier at the forefront of regional operators of the type.

The unveiling took place on 18 January 2026 at Lufthansa Technik Philippines inside the Macroasia Economic Zone at Villamor Airbase in Pasay City, with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos joining aviation executives and government officials for the ceremony.

PAL Holdings Inc. President Lucio C. Tan III framed the aircraft’s arrival as a marker of the airline’s recovery and renewed confidence on the international stage.

“The A350-1000 aircraft stands as a powerful symbol of our resurgence. It represents our confidence to compete globally, while remaining deeply rooted in who we are as Filipinos. In many ways, the arrival of the Airbus A350-1000 mirrors the Philippines today: resilient, forward-looking, and prepared to engage the world with confidence,” Tan said.

He said the airline’s repositioning remains aligned with broader national goals rather than purely commercial considerations.

“As Philippine Airlines continues its transformation, we remain mindful that our journey is inseparable from that of our country,” Tan said. “Our role as the flag carrier is not simply commercial. It is a responsibility that we take very seriously. We exist to connect people, support livelihoods, and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development, consistent with the ideals of Bagong Pilipinas.”

The aircraft carries PAL’s updated “Sunrise” livery and a special “85 Years” marking, timed with the carrier’s anniversary. The airline expects five A350-1000 units to be delivered within 2026, followed by three additional aircraft in 2027.

After the ceremony, President Marcos toured the cabin of the widebody jet, which is set to operate on long-haul transpacific services to destinations in the United States mainland and Canada. The aircraft is fitted with a three-class configuration accommodating 382 passengers: 42 in Business Class, 24 in Premium Economy, and 316 in Economy.

Interior design work was undertaken with Lift Aero Design, with emphasis on passenger comfort and practical use of space. Business Class includes full-flat suites with sliding doors in a 1-2-1 layout, paired with 20-inch 4K entertainment screens and onboard Wi-Fi. Premium Economy seats come with legrests, footrests, and 13.3-inch 4K screens, while Economy Class features a 32-inch seat pitch, adjustable headrests, device holders, and charging ports.

The A350-1000 also brings operational efficiencies, with Airbus projecting up to a 25 percent cut in fuel burn and carbon dioxide emissions compared with older aircraft, alongside compatibility with sustainable aviation fuel. The model additionally expands the airline’s cargo and freight capacity.

PAL marked the occasion with the release of a new anniversary jingle performed by Ogie Alcasid, Gary Valenciano, and Martin Nievera, following the airline’s recognition as Asia Pacific’s Most On-Time Airline for 2025.
