Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla led the signing of several legal agreements between the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the World Governments Summit (WGS) in Dubai. These agreements include a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), an extradition treaty, and a pact on the transfer of sentenced individuals.
Representing the Philippines, Remulla signed the treaties alongside his UAE counterpart, with First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos witnessing the ceremony. The agreements aim to strengthen legal cooperation between the two nations, ensuring justice and protection for Filipinos in the UAE.
The three-day WGS, held from February 11 to 13, 2025, brought together global leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss governance solutions. Other Philippine agencies, including the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), also formalized agreements with UAE counterparts to advance shared economic and social goals.
Remulla emphasized the significance of the partnerships, highlighting the longstanding relationship between the Philippines and the UAE, home to over 600,000 Filipinos. He underscored that the treaties reflect a commitment to justice and international cooperation.
Since its launch in 2013, the WGS has brought together leaders from over 140 countries to tackle global challenges and shape future governance strategies.
