The Department of Health (DOH) reported a sharp increase in stroke cases during the holiday season, with over 300 individuals affected as of January 2, 2025.
Data from eight sentinel sites monitored by the DOH revealed a surge in stroke cases from 12 on December 23, 2024, to 146 by January 2, 2025. Two deaths were recorded among the reported cases. Additionally, 140 stroke patients were admitted to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), while the Tondo Medical Center logged 41 cases. Most patients were aged 45 to 64.
Cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) also rose significantly, climbing from two on December 22 to 74 by January 2. One fatality due to ACS—a condition caused by sudden changes in heart blood flow—was reported.
Bronchial asthma cases spiked as well, increasing from six on December 22 to 80 by January 2, with most patients being children aged 0 to 9. PGH reported 46 cases, and the Tondo Medical Center recorded 11.
Health Secretary Ted Herbosa urged the public to adopt healthier lifestyles to prevent chronic illnesses. “Start the year right and make better choices for health—eat proper food, exercise, and discipline the body,” he said in a GMA News report.
The DOH had earlier advised hospitals to remain vigilant against conditions related to Holiday Heart Syndrome, caused by excessive alcohol consumption, stress, poor sleep, and high intake of salty or fatty foods, which can elevate blood pressure.
