Bulacan Representative Salvador Pleyto Sr. has introduced a bill aimed at eliminating dangling wires and overhead cables to prevent potential accidents. House Bill No. 10427, also known as the “Anti-Dangling Wires Act of 2024,” mandates that all public utility providers, including telephone companies and cable and internet providers, address the issue.
If enacted, the bill would require these providers to bundle sagging and dangling aerial utility wires, remove non-operational or unused wires, and ensure their posts adhere to specified clearance standards for aerial wires and cables. Local government units (LGUs) would have the authority to withhold or cancel permits for providers who fail to comply.
“Dangling wires have been a perennial problem in various cities and municipalities despite the issuance of local ordinances,” Pleyto stated. He emphasized the risks posed by these wires, highlighting their unsightly appearance and the potential for accidents.
The Metro Manila Council has previously announced that local governments will coordinate with telecommunications companies to manage the so-called “spaghetti wires” hanging over streets. Additionally, in February, Senator Raffy Tulfo called for an investigation into frequent road accidents caused by the mishandling and improper maintenance of live and unattended wires.
