Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla exposed on Thursday a corruption scheme involving certain Bureau of Immigration (BI) personnel. These officials allegedly provide “escort services” to blacklisted individuals, allowing them to travel in and out of the country for a fee of P150,000.
Remulla highlighted that this corrupt practice was first identified in 2020. The scheme seems to have made a comeback, with bribes being discreetly given, disguised as the local candy “pastillas.”
“We have information that blacklisted individuals are being offered this escort service for P150,000,” said Remulla.
In response to these allegations, BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco confirmed that the bureau is currently investigating reports of corruption and potential human trafficking involving its staff. “We have leads on major traffickers and are working to ensure they are arrested and prosecuted,” Tansingco stated.
When questioned about his trust in Tansingco amid these revelations, Remulla expressed his confidence in the commissioner. “Yes, I still trust him. However, certain issues need to be addressed. This isn’t a problem that arose overnight,” remarked Remulla.
