PH gov’t disburses nearly half of P2.8 billion aid to 62,000 OFWs

The Philippine government has distributed nearly half of this year’s P2.8 billion assistance fund to over 62,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in need, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). The assistance comes as part of the government’s efforts to support OFWs affected by conflicts in Sudan, Gaza, and other legal disputes abroad.

DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac revealed on Monday that almost 1,000 OFWs from Sudan and another 1,000 involved in the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict have been beneficiaries of government aid. “This is a global operation that will bring OFWs all the way to their families,” Cacdac told PTV, highlighting the comprehensive support provided.

Repatriated workers have also received assistance from various government agencies, including the Department of Health (DOH), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Additionally, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is offering skills training to help returning OFWs transition to new careers or establish their own businesses.

Among the 62,000 recipients, around 54,000 OFWs needed legal assistance to address issues such as labor disputes, withheld wages, and more serious matters like physical injury and theft. “These cases are serious, but we’re stepping up our efforts to provide them with the support they deserve,” said Cacdac.

OFWs from conflict zones like Israel and Sudan have been granted up to P50,000 in financial aid, compared to the usual P10,000 to P20,000 provided for other cases. This increased support highlights the government’s commitment to assisting workers in war-affected regions.

The DMW has been making improvements to ensure the smooth distribution of aid. “There are always areas for improvement,” Cacdac acknowledged, adding that better systems are being put in place for easier access to the fund.

To date, the government repatriates about 900 OFWs monthly, reuniting them with their families through the DMW’s repatriation command center.
