Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Alfonso A. Ver on Friday hailed tennis rising star Alex Eala for her impressive run at the 2026 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, calling her victories a source of pride for Filipinos both in the Emirates and around the world.
In a statement dated February 19, Ver said Eala’s recent performances have resonated strongly with the Filipino community, describing her as a symbol of perseverance and passion. “We are immensely proud of Alex Eala and her incredible string of victories here in the UAE. Her grit, humility, and passion have captured and the heart and admiration of every Filipino,” the ambassador said.
Ver added that Eala’s wins extend beyond personal achievement, framing them as a moment of inspiration for Filipinos globally. “These wins are not just for her, but the entire Filipino nation and an inspiration that with dedication and faith, the Filipino spirit can shine anywhere in the world,” he said.
The ambassador also recognized the role of overseas Filipinos in the UAE who have been closely following Eala’s matches, thanking them for their continued support. “Maraming salamat din sa ating mga kababayan dito sa UAE sa inyong walang-humpay na suporta, sigaw, at pagmamahal,” Ver said.
Eala has been enjoying a strong campaign in the WTA 1000 tournament, beginning with a first-round advancement after American Hailey Baptiste retired injured. She then delivered one of the biggest wins of her career by defeating world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini in straight sets to reach the Round of 16.
Her momentum carried into the next round, where she beat Sorana Cîrstea 7-5, 6-4 to secure a spot in the quarterfinals and set up a meeting with a top-ranked opponent.
Ver also recalled Eala’s message to Filipinos who attended one of her matches, when she asked, “Ilan kaya sa inyo ang nagdarasal para sa akin?”
“Sagot namin, lahat kami, Alex panalangin namin ang patuloy mong tagumpay sabay sa aming panalangin at dasal ng tagumpay ng bawat Pilipino sa UAE o saan ma sa mundo,” Ver said.
