PH Consulate in Hong Kong warns Filipino tourists amid rise in shoplifting cases

The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong has issued a warning to Filipino tourists to strictly follow local laws and avoid shoplifting, following a 12% increase in reported shoplifting cases from January to May 2024.

The Hong Kong police have noted a year-on-year spike in such incidents, with some Filipino tourists implicated as either suspects or victims. The consulate urged travelers to remain vigilant about safeguarding their belongings while stressing the importance of abiding by Hong Kong’s legal framework.

“Under the Hong Kong Theft Ordinance, theft may be punished with a fine and/or imprisonment of up to 10 years,” the consulate reminded the public in a statement.

According to Radio Television Hong Kong, Mong Kok, Tsuen Wan, and Tseung Kwan O were identified as the hotspots for shoplifting cases. Filipino tourists are urged to be cautious when visiting these areas.
