The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has condemned Cavite 4th District Representative Kiko Barzaga’s call to abolish the agency, describing his comments as “misleading” and “deeply insulting” to thousands of personnel serving the country.
Barzaga claimed on social media that the Coast Guard is a “waste of government funds,” accusing it of corruption and warning that its operations in the West Philippine Sea could “cause World War III.”
In a statement on Tuesday, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela said Barzaga’s remarks “grossly misrepresent” the agency’s mandate. “Cong. Barzaga’s statements not only distort facts but also disrespect the brave men and women of the PCG who risk their lives daily to safeguard our sovereignty and sovereign rights,” he said.
The PCG later released an official statement saying it remains open to dialogue with Barzaga “to clarify misconceptions.” PCG spokesperson Noemie Cayabyab explained that auxiliary members cited by the lawmaker are civilian volunteers whose honorary ranks “do not confer authority or compensation.”
Tarriela stressed that the PCG is “not part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines” but a civilian agency under the Department of Transportation, tasked with maritime safety, security, and environmental protection.
He called Barzaga’s proposal “reckless and deeply insulting” to 36,000 personnel. “To trivialize their service as wasteful betrays not only a lack of understanding but also a lack of empathy,” he said.
Barzaga was delisted from the Army reserve force in September after urging soldiers and police to join anti-corruption protests.
