PBA player John Amores and his brother voluntarily surrendered to the police on Thursday, September 26, following a gun shooting incident in Laguna. The two face complaints for attempted murder, with inquest proceedings scheduled the same day.
According to Police Major Bob Louis Ordiz, the brothers turned themselves in due to threats to their safety. “They got scared for their safety, so they decided to come here,” Ordiz stated in Filipino during an interview with GMA Integrated News.
The incident occurred after a heated basketball game on September 25 in Barangay Salac, Lumban, where Amores and his brother had a confrontation with a player named Lee Cacalda. The two challenged each other to a fistfight, and after the game, the confrontation escalated. CCTV footage captured Amores getting off a motorcycle driven by his brother and firing a gun at Cacalda in Barangay Maytalang Uno, before fleeing the scene.
No injuries were reported, and the police confirmed that Amores had already discarded the weapon. This incident comes just days after NorthPort Batang Pier was eliminated from the 2024 PBA Governors’ Cup, marking the end of Amores’ first conference in his second season in the league.
Amores has had a controversial past, including a 2022 incident where he attacked several players during an NCAA game. He was charged with assault and underwent mental health counseling before being drafted by NorthPort Batang Pier in the PBA last year.
