Air travelers passing through the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 3 should prepare for potential power interruptions as the Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa) initiates a series of maintenance activities. Miaa announced on Thursday that the power maintenance activities, which commenced on April 2, may extend until May 28 of this year.
The maintenance work aims to replace deteriorated medium voltage switchgear components across eight different electrical substations within Terminal 3, clarified Miaa. This will necessitate power shutdowns affecting various areas including the terminal’s parking lots, main substation, and substations in the South and North concourses.
Miaa assured passengers that standby generator sets will be deployed at each substation to ensure uninterrupted power supply to critical airport systems. However, travelers should anticipate reduced air conditioning in certain areas and occasional malfunctions of elevators and escalators.
Miaa General Manager Eric Ines urged the cooperation of passengers during this period, emphasizing the long-term benefits of the electrical systems upgrade. “We apologize to all our airport stakeholders. Rest assured that the benefits of this electric systems upgrade will far outweigh the inconveniences it may bring in the course of its implementation. We seek for more patience and understanding from everyone,” Ines stated.
These maintenance activities, lasting over a month, are part of the ongoing electrical systems upgrade at Terminal 3, initiated in 2023. The announcement follows a previous power outage at Naia Terminal 2 on March 27, attributed to electricity supply fluctuations caused by increased loads due to high temperatures.
