A passenger travelling from Abu Dhabi to Dublin aboard an Etihad Airways flight has tested positive for measles, the Abu Dhabi-based carrier confirmed. The incident, reported by Irish authorities, has prompted close-contact tracing efforts.
In response to the situation, an alert has been issued in Ireland urging passengers who traveled on the affected flight to contact the Health Service Executive (HSE) office. Authorities have advised individuals to remain at home in a separate room and seek medical assistance if they exhibit symptoms such as a runny nose, red sore eyes, neck rashes, or a high fever.
Measles, a highly contagious airborne disease primarily affecting children, can lead to severe complications, as highlighted by the World Health Organization. The virus spreads easily through respiratory droplets from an infected person. Vaccination against measles has proven to be highly effective, preventing millions of deaths globally.
An Etihad Airways spokesperson emphasized that the safety and well-being of passengers and crew remain the airline’s top priority. This incident marks the third reported case of measles in Ireland this year.
Measles symptoms typically manifest 10-14 days after exposure and may include a prominent rash, cough, and red, watery eyes. Complications can range from ear infections to pneumonia and, in severe cases, blindness.
