Parents leave son at airport over expired passport, say they didn’t want to waste tickets

A couple is facing intense criticism after reportedly leaving their 10-year-old son behind at Barcelona Airport because his passport had expired—opting to continue their trip without him rather than miss their flight.

The alarming scene was brought to light by airport staff member Lilian, an air-operations coordinator, who shared the incident in a now-viral TikTok video. The footage has drawn hundreds of thousands of views and sparked outrage online.

“They didn’t want to waste their tickets,” Lilian recalled, saying the parents explained they had arranged for a relative to retrieve the boy so they could proceed with their vacation plans. Authorities later found the child alone in the terminal.

According to Lilian, the boy was unable to board due to an expired Spanish passport and missing visa. “Because of this, the parents left him in the terminal and called a relative to collect him,” she said, calling the moment “completely surreal.”

“I’m an air traffic controller, and I’ve seen a lot, but this was completely unbelievable,” she added. “I can’t imagine leaving my child behind like that.”

Police intervened, removing the couple’s luggage from the plane and bringing them in for questioning. However, it remains unclear whether they face legal consequences.

The incident has drawn comparisons to past cases of airport child abandonment, including a 2018 episode in Germany and a recent conveyor belt mishap involving a toddler in New Jersey.
