Panglao reefs defaced by tourists, Bohol government considers area closure

The Provincial Government of Bohol is continuing its crackdown on tourists and dive guides involved in the vandalism of coral reefs near Virgin Island in Panglao. The incident surfaced after dive enthusiasts filed complaints, presenting photos of coral reefs bearing names like “Mojak” and “Min,” along with Korean characters, etched into the reefs.

Governor Aris Aumentado disclosed that a vlog, showing tourists touching the reefs, was also obtained. “Atong gipaningkamutan nga mapanalipdan ug mamintinar kay talagsaon nga kalikopan, gipanamastamasan (We tried our best to protect and maintain the reefs, because this is a rare sight in the environment but it was destroyed),” Aumentado stated.

The governor confirmed that the provincial government has identified the boatman and dive guide involved. “Naa natay information sa boatman ug tour guides sa maong video. Rest assured naay proper investigation para ani (We already have information about the boatman and tour guide in the video. Rest assured we have a proper investigation for this),” he added.

In response, the government is considering closing off the area for rehabilitation while investigations continue. It also emphasized the need for visitors to attend mandatory orientations before diving, with sanctions awaiting those who neglect this requirement, including dive shops and guides. Visitors who are found guilty of damaging corals will face legal consequences for violating environmental laws.
