Palace raises concern over suspected Chinese meddling in 2025 polls

Malacañang on Thursday expressed deep concern over alleged attempts by China to interfere in the Philippines’ 2025 midterm elections, following claims from the National Security Council (NSC) about signs of foreign involvement.

“This is truly alarming,” said Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro, noting that the Marcos administration has ordered an intensified investigation into the matter. “Paiigtingin pa po natin ang—sa utos na rin po ng ating administrasyon—na imbestigahan nang malalim para malaman po natin kung anuman ang katotohanan patungkol po dito.”

While the NSC has not disclosed concrete evidence, the Palace emphasized that it is awaiting further details and will coordinate closely with security officials.

“Sa ngayon po, ang sinabi po sa atin ay pag-iimbestigahan pa po muna para malaman natin kung ano pa po ang mga detalye dito,” Castro added, indicating that more information may be revealed after another round of discussions with the NSC.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., currently in the Vatican with First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos for the funeral of Pope Francis, has reportedly been briefed on the issue.

Meanwhile, China has dismissed the interference allegations. “China follows the principle of non-interference in other countries’ domestic affairs. We have no interest in interfering in Philippine elections,” said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun during an April 24 briefing.

As of now, no timeline has been provided for the completion of the investigation.
